Merry Christmas… you’re in for disappointment!

I’ve always liked Wing, mainly due to nostalgia. But THANK FUCK YOU’RE REVIEWING 0080!! BEST CHRISTMAS GIFT YOU CAN OFFER US GUNDAM FANS!!

oh hi entire plot refrence to gundam ZZ. and yes the little girl being used as a tool ban an evial retainer was a plot point of ZZ. the only first UC storyline not stuffed in to Wing.

PRETTY BOYS WITH PROBLEMS? Wonder if that becomes the newest anime meme.

    • penguintruth

You know, Gundam has pretty much always had pretty boys with problems. Char Aznable was every bit the bishounen in his day as Trowa Barton or Milliardo Peacecraft.

      • George Nolan

True, but I think the issue had more to do with Bandai gaining more influence on the creative direction of Gundam for the sake of merchandising sales. Most earlier Gundam installments before Wing did at least have story it focused on to create a clear sense of pathos for the audience to connect with, especially with Yoshiyuki Tomino at the helm of directing it. On the other hand, Wing mostly has nothing to create a sense of pathos for the audience to connect with the characters, beyond having angsty bishounen for fangirls to swoon with. I think this was what Sage was trying to cover with his point on “pretty boys with problems”, especially when applied to Gundam SEED that amped up the melodrama to a ridiculous degree.

and sadly Wing was also the start of retelling the original series, with a few tweaks for a more modern audience. Say what you will about SEED though, it did restart gundam pop worldwide, and Mu Laflaga was the best caracter in SEED. And destiny wasnt that bad, its a good retelling of Zeta, especialy the whole Shinn + stella, being a retell of camille +four.

          • George Nolan

While I’ll give some kudos that Mu was one of the few highlights of watching SEED, it was still a glorious trainwreck of a series that recycled many plot elements from older Gundam titles and had too many cases of character angsting and melodrama for my tastes. SEED Destiny was much worst with Shinn becoming a complete jerkass going into the show’s second half and the supposed tragic elements of his character are nowhere as engaging and convincingly dramatic as what Kamille dealt with throughout Zeta.

            • Miang

dont get me wrong Destiny is not good, i just said it isnt that bad. i find it more enjoyable then SEED. ok prob mostly because of i soooooooo want issak to get into the destiny gundam and shout SHINING FINGAAAA. you know with the OG voice actor being the same for both

To be honest, Wing held my interest until about half-way through, at which point I stopped caring.

Now Mobile Suit G Gundam was a series that surprisingly held my interest and entertained me throughout its run. Yes, I’m the odd man out that actually likes it in a proper fashion and not ironically. It had strong, if somewhat cheesy and stereotypical at times, characters, and a storyline they followed through the entirety of the show without losing focus. Also, I was really just spoiling for robot on robot fights at the time.

G gundam is soooo much fun. as a fan of the old 70s super robot, and the modern reboots. The Hot-Blooded Domon and crew actualy made me reimagine myself on saturday and sunday morning in my jammies. Listening to od grandizer, astroboy, and harlock.

        • jesternario

I’ve never seen those myself (I think I watched Mazinger, but I don’t know. Was that the one that was hidden under a pool and had “V” shaped wings that flew towards him to attach?) But I DID see Voltron and Robotech, which is what ultimately got me into anime in the first place

          • Miang

well mazinger Z has a reboot series with shin mazinger Z shogeki, to my knowledge only fan sub. so does getter robo with new getter robo, plus 2 older series being Getta robo armedagon ( great) and new getter robo Vs shin getter robo ( meh). and yeah that his mazinger Z, and he his the grand daddy of super robots, launch the ole genra, and the pilot Koji Kabuto, His the archetypal super robot pilot

            • jesternario

All I honestly remember was seeing an episode on USA back when I was like 4. It was an episode where they couldn’t raise the robot out of the pool because of a wire placed length-wise. Not sure what the wire would do. I just remember they couldn’t raise him up beyond it.

    • That intro was confusing to me

Battlefield of the pacifist is the manga tie in, that fits right in the middle. Even has wu-fei’s motivation in it.
