Did the titlist get paid by the letter?

I’ m mostly hit or miss when it comes to Makoto Shinkai. I recently talked about one of his films, The Garden of Words. I really liked it and it was beautifully animated and has a huge amount of atmosphere, but the ending felt rushed and the two main leads are not the most interesting in terms of personality.
I don’t personally consider him the next Hayao Miyazaki that a lot of people are saying he is. I think if he was a bit more whimsical, easy to follow, and not so philosophical, I think his movies would be better received. I think Mamoru Hosoda is the new ” miyazaki” since his films are easier to be invested into.
Good review. I think it’s a little more interesting when you get to talk about something that gives you both good opinions and negative ones.
Minor nitpick, but…
“Three days from the 12th”? Sooo…the 15th?
Honestly the narrative flaws in this anime seem to be very prevalent in many Animes: plot elements and developments just happen with little setup or or explanation. Ideas and notions are so often half-realized and only shallowly explored. Its kind of frustrating because its lends the illusion of subtly when its just kind of clunkly clumsy storytelling.
It is more prevalent then that. The most common way fiction, not just anime, will disappoint its audience is simply by using its set up as a backdrop and never exploring it except through shallow and token means.
This is mostly because the piece of fiction never intended to explore those themes or ideas and simply used them as a backdrop for a much simpler story without really informing the reader that it was fluff all along.
Harem animes are the most prolific of animes, IMO, to do this. Mostly because the backgrounds, set up, and characters are just an excuse for what it really wants to do and that is typical harem Hijinks.
Exactly how I honestly feel about the transition from Evangelion 2.22 to 3.33.
I remember being very bored when I watched this movie the first and only time. And then I sent it to Sage, and I’m honestly surprised he did an episode on it, this is one of the dullest anime I sent him in that fateful box.
It’s alright that you didn’t love it. I’m certainly glad that you didn’t hate it. 🙂
And regarding the question of “Did the titlist get paid by the letter?”, all I can say is
“Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?”
I remember a few years ago when Walmart’s Online Site/Store announced they’d be selling comics and graphic novels.
Everyone was quick to point out that most of their stock, and their features page was nothing but Yaoi porn.
Not the plot but moments of this, including the girl being asleep linked to the science, kept making me think of Fragile Dreams.
If you need to cry for a week, play that game. Seriously though the game does look nice and I love the story, even if so many things make me sad.
Gendo impersonation was hilarious,
“Unless…they hated both.”
I have a soft spot for Shinkai, but… I had completely forgotten that I had watched this years ago. I liked the movie, even though the whole “girl and the tower” plot device is complete bullshit.
Still, thanks for reminding me of its existance, even if it plaes in comparison to 5cm. per second, which is, in my modest opinion, one of the top ten anime movies ever made.
