With a series that has nowhere else to go but up, the re-boot Tomb Raider does its job and little else.
I haven’t played any Tomb Raider game other than this one, and I haven’t played any Uncharted, but I REALLY enjoyed this game. My only complaint was that the bow feels rather overpowered. Once you gain the ability to recover fired arrows, guns no longer have meaning. I only used the shotgun to blow open walls, and I NEVER used the rifle.
Not to mention when you get the competition bow and the ability to shoot through body armor those armored dudes become less menacing.
Yeah, I didn’t get that ability until endgame, myself, but even then it was hardly necessary. I’d just do two head shots instead of one. If enemies were really intensely armored, then I’d just wait for them to attack and do the QTE counterattack until I could deal a deathblow. It made the game a bit too easy. Hell, I exploited it against three armored guys wielding katanas at the end, and I only took damage if I got sloppy.
Hmm, shame, I disliked the Tomb Raider series for a long time, but finally got into it with Legend and Anniversary, the latter of which I enjoyed the most. I was looking forward to this one. Oh, well, the game play still looks fun, and Lara’s story line has never been the most compelling in the first place (not even in the comics, which were pretty decent, all things considered). I’ll probably still give this one a whirl, but I;m gunna probably have to wait for a price drop.
Did you play the PC version and if so did you play it on a nvidia card?
If so that would explain a lot of the glitches.
To quote Andrew Burnes CEO of nVidia:
“We are aware of performance and stability issues with GeForce GPUs running
Tomb Raider with maximum settings. Unfortunately, NVIDIA didn’t receive
final game code until this past weekend which substantially decreased
stability, image quality and performance over a build we were previously
provided. We are working closely with Crystal Dynamics to address and
resolve all game issues as quickly as possible.
Please be advised that these issues cannot be completely resolved by
an NVIDIA driver. The developer will need to make code changes on their
end to fix the issues on GeForce GPUs as well. As a result, we recommend
you do not play Tomb Raider until all of the above issues have been
In the meantime, we would like to apologize to GeForce users that are
not able to have a great experience playing Tomb Raider, as they have
come to expect with all of their favorite PC games.
Don’t forget guys, this is a “Realistic reboot of tomb raider”
Keep that in mind after she shrugs off a bear trap, arrow, gunshot, falls, and does stuff straight out of Assassins Creed..
Sounds legit! 😛
Sage I follow your reviews and love your quite articulate opinions but I think you are wrong here. You make it out to be a really average game and make a lot of negative remarks but I honestly thinks its a great game. Im with Angry Joe when I say its really fun game. I have had great time playing it. You often put negative spins on your reviews and a lot of the time I can see your points but im now 50% into Tomb Raider and feel you are way off the mark on this one. Oh by the way im not a TR fanboy and I can call shit when its shit and while tomb raider will not win game of the year its a much better game then you make it out to be.
I finished this damn thing not 6 hours ago.
Its just a mediocre action game.
AJ is dead wrong on this.
This is a title that will be rightfully forgotten within the spring period.
The “plotholes” you mention ARE explained, perhaps you weren’t paying attention again. And it’s really hillarious how you’re judging this game’s graphics on what clearly appears to be console footage. The console version looks nothing like the PC version (much better textures, lighting, shadow and hair effects). I had a great time playing this game, and i think it’s a big step forward when you look at the latest few titles. I honestly don’t understand how you can mention at the beginning how long this game has been going downhill, and then expect something stellar (rebooting a series is a risky business). One point i do agree on is the forced multiplayer, that should not have been put in.
your the first person online to say something bad about this game, which means we can ALWAYS count on you to give an honest review!!!!
Sage, did you EVER play Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld? Sure, they weren’t “must-play” games, but after those releases, the franchise was hardly an “industry joke”. Way to sleep through the past decade, you fat fucking sack of shit!
