Adult Swim Month is here again, and it’s time to take a look at where the heartache all started.

Surely, Season 3 would never meet the same fate as other decade-long absent continuations of established properties…
Looking at you, Slayers Revolution.
To be fair even with all the flaws that the series has I still love Tenchi Muyo and I actually own the Universe, Tokyo and Ryo-oki series plus the movies. But the reason why I love this show so much is because of the character with Ryoko being my main favorite of the bunch with Washu and Sasami tied in a close second. I’ve never seen season 3 though and after hearing how bad it did I skipped it and let’s hope that season 4 can be good.
I’ve never watched Tenchi myself. It never aired here because we didn’t get Adult Swim and, when we finally did, all the anime wer replaced in the block with Scooby Doo movies from the 70s. Something to do with distribution rights I think.
Anyway, so my only exposure to Tenchi were early internet image searches and Sage’s reviews.
With that said I just wanted to leave a comment on 2 things; the cels for, what I now know are the first season (and the 2 movies Sage has shown) are GORGEOUS. Seriously! That linework is some of the most delicious I’ve seen in something like this! To learn it’s because the first season was an OVA makes a LOT of sense suddenly. And then seeing the clips Sage showed of Season 3’s digital work, not to mention simplified and cheaper linework, is actually physically painful to be exposed to. Like it actually HURTS to see that crisp, detailed goodness reduced to anime flounder face and blurred uninspired colours and lines. AND I DON’T HAVE ANY ATTACHMENT TO THIS SHOW!!
Second, I’m glad Sage pointed it out because it’s something that’s stuck with me for a while seeing these Tenchi reviews; Ryoko’s dubbed voice is FANTASTIC. I don’t like dubs. I really really hate them is probably more accurate to say. Watching a Japanese show already puts a cultural boundary between me and the material. To THEN have the Americans™ dub over it and include their own cultural undertones to something to add a SECOND cultural barrier between me and the material is…. not something I really enjoy. Especially when the dub work is sub-par or downright painful.
But if I ever sit down and actually watch Tenchi, I’m gonna watch the dub. Because that Ryoko voice is smooth as butter and I don’t think I’d be willing to sacrifice it. I’m not a 100% on board for the clips of her shown here, but the lines Sage showed in the first movie and Daughter of Darkness… oh yeah. I’m all over performances like that!
Anyway, thanks for pointing a clearer direction for the new and curious to follow, Sage.
Who owns this Franchise? is it Toei? Because if it is there’s little point in holding out hope for it to be worthwhile. The Toei curse is flowing strong at the moment.
That caddy shack joke. The memories.
low blow to Star Fox Zero….its a great game, but you either like the motion controls or not. it’s a reboot so its not a sequel….Sounds like you just did a low brow joke and just went off on the vocal minority
Overall great video and review. definitely interesting to see the evolution of the show from its high points and low points. Just think you should have used something else than the games (not like you are wrong about the first two games, but still)
Yea, but it’s the second remake/reboot of the series, and the motion controls were not needed.
they weren’t, but I like them so….yeah that’s just me. i can understand if someone doesn’t like motion controls, but still.
Covered the first OVA last year. I’ll get to the second later this year. That third one… that fucking third OVA… was an abomination that ruined everything. That Kajishima has a fourth one coming is baffling.
Ah Tenchi…… oh mostly what got me Seeking more of “Tenchi Muyo!” when I saw it I seek and wanting to watch more and yeah he may hate it, but like some who like Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory Tenchi what gave me that start.
So yeah I know you may not big fan of it sage but I respect it and well I just wish it gone on the original run then… what we got on tenchi muyo ryo-ohki that just…ruin every thing….
Sure most think of Tenchi Muyo! story is good until it get to the at the end climax
it why I more lean to be on Tenchi universe since it have a middle and end… as for what they did with Ryo-ohki with
with that replace voice actor for Ryoko in the Ryo-ohki I think I jump out moment I hear it
I just jump out and roll like garnet. =n=
well personal history here: when I watch this…. I did not know what Harem anime was know it now Tenchi get what to keep us interest to make it feel like “Family” in way then assholes forcefully moving in case they want to bang the hero.
when I watch this I kinda wish that I have a odd family like that that bit crazy I was young and dumb but it was simpler time that I enjoy this anime for that the girls not crazy for his D… well Ryoko but she more Human just want with him But that just me with Rose tin glasses
Any way I gonna get some thicker skin and watch it sorry I just want to share personal interest of this anime I grown up and I glad we now have sage to look at it.
So I all ready for you to rip it part at the chopping block!
Still love ya sage keep up with the work :3
now that I watch it.
yeah I hate Ryo-ohki I with there 2nd season kinda did suck and thing felt off form the 1st season and the starting ep was bit weird how we know them now, but yeah I glad we all agree on few things.
😀 Love you sage :3
Got a question, ever read the manga that tenchi has spawned or the 2/3/4 non tenchi based shows? You got dual parallel trouble adventures, photon as the ones that are just cameo as best, to gxp which is set in universe, and war on geminar that is set alternate universe in universe if that makes sense.
At the very least, gxp shows that there is in universe stories that can be told.
Then you have the two tenchi comics that easily surpass what the show is in enjoyment. Points that drag on can be read through faster, stupid moments are called out, fun short stories like the baby are handled in 1 chapter rather then a 2-4 chapter long episode.
Can not recommend the manga as much as i do.
While some of the tenchi series is tough to sit through, the comics, if i remember right cover one of the movies in short order, I believe the tenchi in love plot.
And the spinoff where Sasami is a magical girl.
Another look at Tenchi Muyo, huh? Somehow I thought you weren’t going to go back to this one. I’m not sure I thought that, though.
Samurai Champloo next week? I’m looking forward to that one since I’ve seen some episodes of it, but in my case it was on some here-today-gone-tomorrow channel we had in Canada for a while.
Regarding the “Sasami is actually Tsunami” plot in season 2, that was actually a seed from the 1st, given that Tenchi was saved by Tsunami who was (then) inexplicably shown with Sasami as her mirror image. The rest goes into a debate on whether or not current Sasami is or isn’t the original, due to how the Goddesses affect reality.
I have a soft spot in my heart for all of the Ryo-Ohki canon of Tenchi: the OVA’s, GXP, and War on Geminar. Hell, I even really like Parallel Trouble, which is more or less a related show due to Zinv and the Light Hawk Wings.
I found it so bizarre that GXP was made first before OVA 3… as a teaser FOR OVA 3, when it makes more sense that if it were the other way around. What’s sad is that I think that OVA 3 COULD have been good, if it was a full show like GXP was and not just confined to half a dozen episodes. It tried to shove in so much, in such a short amount of time, that it couldn’t NOT be a mess.
What makes it worse is that Masaki (the author) has a lot of backstory for the universe that’s only in Japan only companion guides or novels that one would be lucky to even hear about on fansites. Hell, Masaki wrote a whole retelling of GXP because he felt the director made it too comedic (which… yeah, he was director of Excel Saga, what did you expect?)
And I still haven’t worked up the nerve to watch Ai Tenchi Muyo yet, since I have NO clue on what kind of quality to expect from a mini series with 5 minute long episodes.
War on Geminar was entertaining enough, but quite a few issues that series has is with it’s and Kenshi’s backstory, and how apparently callous it kinda comes across if you think that the only reason Rea even HAD Kenshi was just to have someone save Geminar, have all the girls “train” him throughout his entire life, and put him in a situation that is not only potentially deadly, but might be nigh impossible for him to return.
Yosho…. at least Tenchi Universe didn’t cop out on him disguising himself; he just got old. …Though that raises the question on how Kagato(?) managed to impersonate him to try to gain the throne…. It’s been years since I’ve seen Universe.
Finally, I just gotta say… with all of OVA 3’s faults, and the slapdash backstory baggage that GXP & WoG had…. all of them were at least better than Tenchi in Tokyo.
I love GXP, no clue why but it always touches a spot in my heart when I watch it.
GXP is decent enough. It’s really what they should have done with the third OVA, shuffle Tenchi off to some kind of space school. Instead of having him in the same place and just adding pointless, do-nothing new characters. And since the pink-haired guy he “dueled” with in the second OVA was in the show, it would have been great to show him trying to get his revenge, and failing spectacularly. Maybe even have Ryoko and Ayeka enroll themselves in his class to keep an eye on him and make sure no girl gets him. Instead, we got Noike. Fuckin’ Noike.
I think a large part of GXP’s strength is in Seina’s character arc. Tenchi is fine in a sort of “live vicariously through this character” kind of way, but Seina showed more growth throughout that series than Tenchi did in the first 2 OVA’s.
Seina had faults, he was weak, and the universe loved to screw him over. But he constantly tried to improve himself and do the right thing. And despite how he ended up when the series ended (super happy ending), he managed to feel less Gary Stu-ish than Tenchi did.
I’d love to read the GXP novels to see how different the story was told compared to the series.
Bennett I Sent The Clip When You Praised Ryoko’s English Dub To Petra Buchard Her Voice Actor Ps Season 3 Sucks Balls
Mona Marshall did a decent job, but I agree it is no where near as good.
God, Tenchi was one of my first exposures to anime ever back in the early 90s when I was getting the series on VHS.
As to answer Ryoko’s powers & Jewels, she is inherently powerful, and can store up her own energy to create an artificial version of the red jewels which you commonly see her wear. I honestly through this was reference in the first series.
There are way to many Tenchi series and spin-offs now a days, we have Ryo-ohki which also include (Which I love as a guilty pleasure), and War on Gaminar (not seen yet, stars Tenchi’s.. little brother).
That said, the Ryo-ohki series is fun but the least coherent when it comes to story, The Universe series is the most coherent with an actually evolving storyline, beginning and end.. but even then it feels like it has filler. The worst series though will always be Tenchi in Tokyo.
TiT just seemed lacking in every way, and did we really need a 3rd Tenchi origin story/series?
Finally, apparently the original script for the Ryo-Ohki series was for Ryoko and Tenchi to end up together. I honestly would have preferred this ending, and I am glad it seems to be the case at the end of Universe.
I really like Tenchi Muyo. To me, it’s the anime version of Seinfeld: the “story” may be convoluted as all hell, and some character moments might not make sense but it’s the core character traits that shined through it all that we latched on to the most and anchored too. Yes all the points you addressed should make it a bad show overall and if it started now, then it would’ve died after its first season. But given the time it came out and the audience it did reach gave it a sort of underground, cult hipster following that would linger on triggering memories and feelings only on moments that would be shown on a highlight reel. A lot, if not all, can be blamed on its production and studio problems. Same for the dub team. But when you’re asked to take a garbage pile and spin it into fortune but end up with an homage Picasso painting, you take what you can.
Meh. I never really cared for the Tenchi meta series. I never found any of it to be particularly bad (including the third Ryo-Ohki series) but none of it was especially memorable to me, plus it didn’t help matters that the franchise was airing around the same time as other powerhouse shows competing for my viewership like Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Outlaw Star, and The 08th MS Team.
LOL That Gendo punching gag had me rolling. Quick someone make that a gif.
What about Tenchi Muyo Galaxy Police?
Tenchi Muyo was fun, silly, and had a serious core here and there. Tenchi Muyo and Big O’s original “can’t find it ANYWHERE” run actually hold some of my first exposure to anime, and are likely why I got into anime in the first place.
I thought most fans considered “Tenchi In Tokyo” the worst entry in the series.
They do. Or at least they did. It’s still debatable.
Tokyo played coy with the audience (the American one at least) that it was a whole separate continuity from Universe until about… halfway(?) through the show? The art style was distractingly different. Ryo-Ohki turned into some dumb looking pink robot. The comedy was pretty bad. Then you had Sakuya who was Tenchi’s love interest up until the point that her whole deal was revealed.
OVA 3 was similar to the first two in art style, but because of the years long hiatus between them, the switch to digital paint and CG in 3 was noticeable as well. You had a ton of plot threads from the prior OVAs shoved into this one. A major plot point about Sasami’s mom in the future had to be cut out entirely due to time, but is still canon due to how it affected the plot. And worse, nearly all of the girls were shoved into the background for Noike, who’s connection to Kagato came out of nowhere due to the fact that Kagato’s backstory was in Japanese only companion guide like what Kingdom Hearts does with its Ultimanias.
So on one hand, you have a lousy self contained series, the other a disappointing entry in a well liked series.
14:21 Just a little chlorine that’s all.
Also WHAT DID I DO?!
awesome review man! very nostalgic!
I hate Ayeka, and have never understood why people can love Tenchi Muyo so much with her around. The dub makes her even worse, I get homicidal urges when I listen to her.
Tenchi Muyo without the fluff and stupidity could’ve been a kind of FLCL, with Tenchi and Ryoko dabbling in some real space piracy and stuff. Oh well.
I like her voice. It makes her sound so uppercrust and dignified, which makes the ridiculous things all the more hilarious when they happen to her.
